Meet Helios-Black Leadership Network Scholar: Jaelyn Wise
Major: Student Affairs
Expected Graduation: May 2026
My name is Jaelyn Wise, and I am a student at the University of South Florida where I am pursuing a major in student affairs with a concentration in college student affairs. I am set to graduate in May 2026. I work as a counselor/advisor alongside my studies, gaining invaluable experience in helping students navigate their academic and personal growth.
Receiving the Helios Black Leadership Network Scholarship has been a transformative moment in my educational journey. As a first-generation, low-income student, the financial burden of higher education has often been overwhelming. This scholarship has provided me with much-needed relief, allowing me to focus on my studies without constantly worrying about how I would afford tuition and other educational expenses. The Helios BLN scholarship has empowered me to seize academic opportunities that might have otherwise been out of reach. It has also alleviated stress and allowed me to dedicate more time to building connections within the student affairs field, preparing me for a successful career.
Beyond the financial support, the Helios BLN scholarship has positively impacted my life in ways I never anticipated. As a first-generation student, I often felt alone in navigating the complexities of college life, from balancing academics with personal responsibilities to figuring out the best way to advance in my career. However, being part of the BLN community has given me a sense of belonging and support.
I’ve connected with other students and professionals who share similar experiences, creating a network of mentors and peers who have helped guide me along the way. The BLN family has made me feel seen and heard, giving me the confidence to pursue my goals.
Looking ahead, I aspire to continue my work as a counselor/advisor, helping other students who face similar challenges to those I’ve encountered. I want to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for students navigating higher education, especially those from underserved backgrounds. I hope to continue learning, growing, and using the opportunities I’ve been given to give back to my community.
As a first-generation student, the BLN scholarship has been more than just financial support—it has been a catalyst for my success and a reminder that I can achieve great things.
