Meet American Dream Fund Scholar: Erick Garcia

In 2007, while on a full-ride scholarship at Arizona State University, pursuing a degree in Computer Systems Engineering, my life took an unexpected turn. Proposition 300 was implemented, which reclassified me as an international student, despite having lived in Arizona since 1997. This sudden change resulted in the loss of my scholarships and forced me to face the daunting reality of out-of-state tuition. Though devastating, this pivotal moment introduced me to a community of brilliant students who, like me, were navigating the challenges of pursuing higher education while undocumented.

Together, we began organizing and seeking ways to continue our education, driven by a shared vision of breaking barriers. Fortunately, we were supported by individuals and institutions that recognized our potential, regardless of immigration status. I was fortunate to be awarded the American Dream Fund scholarship, which enabled me to graduate in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science.

After graduation, I took a non-traditional path for someone with a tech background, delving into digital organizing for a national nonprofit. For the next decade, I dedicated myself to advocating for immigrants like myself, leveraging technology to amplify our voices.

Education has always been a beacon of hope in my life, which is why I didn’t hesitate when the opportunity arose to serve as the Digital and Technology Director at Aliento. This role has allowed me to blend my personal experience as an undocumented student with my expertise in digital organizing, supporting students striving for higher education regardless of immigration status.

While my family provided the emotional support I needed, the American Dream Fund scholarship solidified my dream of becoming an engineer. It reminded me that even in times of uncertainty, there are always people who believe in us and are willing to help. Now, I have the opportunity to pay it forward.
