Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund of Metro Orlando and Helios Education Foundation Celebrate Hispanic Scholarship Recipients

Orlando, FL-Thirty outstanding Hispanic students attending local universities will be honored and recognized at the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund’s 15th Annual Scholarship Award Ceremony taking place Saturday, October 25, 2014. Each student has been awarded a scholarship in the amount of $5,000 to be used towards completion of their academic goals. This year’s keynote speaker is Paul Luna, President and CEO of Helios Education Foundation.

Founded in the year 2000, to date, the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund of Metro Orlando (HHSFMO) has provided more than $918,500 to help 239 students from the local Hispanic community pursue a college education.

This summer, HSSFMO announced the partnership with Helios Education Foundation. HHSFMO was awarded a two-year $1 million grant, which will establish an organizational strategic framework as well as seed a scholarship endowment.  “The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity indicates that by the year 2020, over sixty percent of all Florida jobs will require a postsecondary certificate or degree” said Paul Luna, President and CEO of Helios Education Foundation. “We proudly partner with the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund of Metro Orlando to ensure that through the work of this organization, the Latino students they support are prepared to meet the challenges of a competitive 21st century global economy.”

As a firm believer in the power of collaboration, HHSFMOis proud to have developed exciting partnerships with organizations such as Helios Education Foundation, as well as with local community organizations."Words cannot properly express the gratitude we feel for our sponsors, partners, Board and volunteers whose support made it possible to award thirty Latino students in Central Florida, the largest number of awardees in our organization's history! A huge thank you goes to our newest partner, the Helios Education Foundation, whose support will provide us with long term opportunities to continue our work well into the future,” said HHSFMO Board Chair Adriana Comellas-Macretti.Local supporting organizations include: the Hispanic Bar Association, awards scholarships to students currently studying for a law degree; the Education Foundation of Osceola and the Osceola Hispanic Business Council’s joint efforts resulted in a scholarship to two (2) students in Osceola County; Casa de Mexico’s partnership awards a scholarship to a student of Mexican heritage; and Rollins Evening Emerging Leaders (REEL) Scholarship Program, awards one (1) full-tuition scholarship to the Hamilton Holt School At Rollins College.

The scholarship recipients will be honored and celebrated at a dinner banquet held at Disney’s Contemporary Resort with the attendance of Board members, partner organizations and members of the local business community.

The Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund of Metro Orlando’s mission is to engage and honor outstanding Hispanic students, identify a diverse pipeline of Hispanic talent and actively engage the inclusive Central Florida community.

Since its establishment in 2001, the Scholarship Fund has awarded over $813,000 to 209 students.  HHSFMO recognizes that the growth of the local Hispanic population has created additional needs which they seek to address by identifying quality scholars and awarding significant scholarships that will make a difference in a student’s academic success and ultimately benefit their community.
