TRANSITION YEARS (GRADES 5-12)
Helping Youth Transition through the Middle Years
Grades 5 through 12 are often regarded as some of the most challenging for students, especially middle school. No longer children and not yet adults, the social, academic and personal pressures can significantly impact individual success. It is frequently during the middle years when youth who are struggling become discouraged and distracted, at times leading them to believe that dropping out is the answer.
Helios Education Foundation’s greatest area of emphasis is to help young students prosper through these formative years. Our goal? Ensuring youth have the support they need to transition successfully through the various stages of education—elementary to middle school, middle to high school and high school to post-secondary education. Within the Transition Years we are working to:
Improve Teacher Quality
Investing in the success of teachers through training, development and mentoring programs and initiatives. Exploring classroom and system improvements within the middle years as well as quality educator retention strategies. (Grades 6-8)Increase Curriculum Rigor and Student Readiness
Preparing young adults to enter the workforce with the talent and knowledge necessary to succeed in a highly-skilled global market through improved literacy and exposure to rigorous math and science curriculum. Ensuring students are prepared to succeed in post-secondary education. (Grades 6-8)Foster Personal Growth and Character Development
Surrounding students with support and development opportunities to build self-esteem and confidence, cultivate leadership skills, enhance learning abilities and provide personal enrichment—all contributing to short- and long-term academic achievement. (Grades 5 -12)Cultivate Parent and Community Involvement
Engaging parents and communities in the success of children, youth and young adults. Educating about the vital role each plays in student achievement, setting high expectations and keeping them engaged through ongoing preparation and support. (Grades 5 -12)
