By: Leslie Bautista, Glendale Community College, EXCEL Program Mentee
As a first year EXCEL student at Glendale Community College (GCC), the thought of transitioning from high school to college was an overwhelming experience. I completed dual enrollment during high school, but still felt clueless about college life. After learning about the STEM Scale program at GCC, my feelings of worry almost diminished. The program exposed me to material that sparked my passion in STEM, which lead me to pursue my degree in civil engineering.
It was through STEM Scale that I learned about the EXCEL Program at GCC. EXCEL students receive one-on-one attention from a supportive team that will help students in the program accomplish their goals and connect them with the right services and resources.
I am grateful to be part of the EXCEL Program because it is one of the most influential, motivating and life changing programs. The EXCEL Program made transitioning from high school to college easier through mentoring and learning resources. As an EXCEL mentee, I am also an Honor’s student, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and vice president of a student club called Women Rising. I've also had the opportunity to job shadow a civil engineer to learn more about my career path. Thanks to EXCEL and STEM Scale my college experience has made a huge difference in my life.
