Dr. Jo Anne Vasquez Recognized With the Outstanding Leadership in Science Education Award

Congratulations to Dr. Jo Anne Vasquez, Helios’ Vice President of Educational Practices on her recent recognition by the National Science Education Leadership Association (NSELA). She was awarded the Outstanding Leadership in Science Education Award which honors an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in science education at the school, district, county, regional, and/or national level.
Dr. Vasquez has a diverse career in STEM education that spans more than 45 years and is a recognized leader both nationally and internationally. She has been a classroom teacher, a school district science specialist, a national professional development provider, author, adjunct professor. She currently contributes to strategies around Helios’ investments and works to create alignment of the investments throughout the education continuum and is providing technical assistance in areas of education reform including Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards, STEM education and assessments.
Throughout her career, Dr. Vasquez has provided leadership and strong advocacy for STEM education in state, national and international organizations. She has served as President of the following organizations: National Science Teachers Association, National Science Education Leadership Association, the International Council of Associations for Science Education, and Arizona Science Teachers Association. In 2002 Jo Anne was appointed to the National Science Board, the first K-12 educator to hold a seat on the Board. During her service on the NSB Board, she provided leadership and became the lead author for the NSB’s National Action Plan for Addressing the Critical Needs of the U.S. Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education System.
